Teacher's Guide

Welcome to our ESL World Adventure curriculum. This project has been designed as a part of a course in the Master of Educational Technology program through the University of British Columbia. It intends to build a cohesive educational approach with and contextual use of media and technology in a classroom.

This curriculum has been built as a tool for an English as a second/foreign language classroom with young students at an intermediate language level. Through exposure to English media, such as videos and games, the students are encouraged to develop an authentic and situated language practice that can f
oster mindful communicative use of English. Furthermore, the students will simultaneously build technological literacy skills that can be applied to working, problem-solving, and self-teaching environments they may encounter in the future.

We invite you to deploy this project as a trial in your classroom, after which you are welcome to use the structures to model and style your own curriculum, tailored to your students and teaching environment. We have scaled technology integration from one computer in a classroom to a 1:1 tablet or computer ratio.

Below is a list of sections to support you in the classroom and to encourage you to possibly try a few new ways of learning with your students. Throughout there will be tips and tidbits for you to read and apply. We have intentionally removed in-text referencing for simplicity, but have provided a full reference list for our research, as well as a playlist of videos that may interest you, at the very end.

Regards,
Neil, Kate, Kathryn, Karen and Jamie
